Theodore Roosevelt: The Only President Medal of Honor Recipient

Charged uphill to attack entrenched enemies in Cuba

Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt later became the 26th President of the United States, but in 1898 in the Battle of San Juan Hill, he led 5 “Rough Riders” up a hill to charge enemy positions while under heavy fire. Upon reaching the top, he shot and killed one enemy with his pistol allowing his men to take the hill. His valor went unheard of until 2001 when his family was presented with the medal by Clinton. It is clear from Roosevelt’s actions in the Spanish American War and his many accomplishments including National Parks, Nobel Peace Prize, Panama Canal construction, surviving an assassination attempt, and various world travels that he was a driven and extraordinary man. Teddy Roosevelt died in his sleep at age 60.

At the time, the Vice President was heard to say that “Death had to take Roosevelt sleeping, for had he been awake, there would have been a fight” Valor is in you. Set it free.
