Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Arm: Creepy Post Halloween Tale

Jackson’s arm has its own burial and headstone

While doing research on Major General Smedly Butler, I came across an obscure reference to Stonewall Jackson’s left arm that had been amputated during the Civil War. Smedley was told by a local that the arm was buried in a wooden box on his property. Scoffing at the locals and wanting to prove them wrong, Smedley gathered up a few Marines and dug up a small wooden box containing the arm. Shocked, he put it in a metal box, reburied it and gave it a gravestone marker. Jackson had been shot accidentally by his own men and had to have the arm amputated. Chaplain Beverly Lacy upon finding the arm did not want it buried with other discarded limbs and took it to her brother’s farm and gave it a Christian burial there. Jackson was not informed of the arm’s fate. He died some days after losing the arm of pneumonia. The actual location of the arm is still unknown today with some suspecting that it had been stolen or misplaced.

The National Park Service still remains unsure where it is, but they are sure it is there………..somewhere………… Creepy.
