Sergeant Alvin York
WW1 Hero who took out 35 machine guns
Sergeant York earned the Medal of Honor by attacking a hill manned with 35 German machine guns taking them all out, and captured 132 Germans in the process. Alone. Sergeant York originally claimed to be a pacifist and was resistant to the draft as a conscientious objector. Convinced that he was defending his country, he still urged the Germans, while he was still being shot at, to surrender. Many chose not to surrender and he gunned them down with his 1911 pistol when they attacked him. Sergeant York was awarded the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, Medaille Militaire, and Legion of Honor to name a few. He was awarded over 50 decorations from many countries. A movie was later made about his exploits. He returned to his Tennessee farm after the war.
It takes Valor to throw yourself into the fight even if you value peace more.
