Operation Tidal Wave: A Heroic Low-Level Raid by 178 B-24 Bombers

5 Medals of Honor and 56 Distinguished Service Crosses Awarded
In a daring effort to cripple Nazi Germany’s oil production, Allied forces launched Operation Tidal Wave, a massive air raid targeting the heavily guarded oil refineries in Ploiești, Romania. Unbeknownst to the mission planners, the Germans had fortified the area with an unprecedented concentration of anti-aircraft guns, creating a deadly trap for the incoming bombers.
On August 1, 1943, 178 B-24 Liberator bombers took off from airfields in Libya, flying at an audaciously low altitude of just 30 feet to evade enemy radar. As they approached the target, the sky erupted with intense anti-aircraft fire. B-24s began falling in flames, caught in a relentless barrage. By the mission’s end, only 88 planes returned, with 55 so badly damaged they were no longer airworthy. Of the 178 bombers that set out, only 33 remained operational, and over 500 crewmen were lost, killed, captured, or missing.
Despite the catastrophic losses, Operation Tidal Wave showcased extraordinary heroism. The bomber crews displayed unparalleled courage, with countless acts of valor in the face of overwhelming odds. Their bravery earned 5 Medals of Honor and 56 Distinguished Service Crosses, a testament to their sacrifice. Though the mission failed to achieve its strategic goal of halting German oil production, it remains one of the most heroic and tragic operations of World War II.
Known as the bloodiest air battle in aviation history, Operation Tidal Wave stands as a powerful reminder of the courage within us all. Valor is in you. Set it free.
