Lt. Hugh B. Miller: The Wolfman of Arundel Island. He terrorized the Japanese army wounded and alone.

On July 5, 1943, Lieutenant Hugh Miller’s destroyer, the USS Strong, was sunk by a Japanese torpedo. Exploding depth charges from the ship severely wounded Miller internally. After drifting for days, Miller and three crewmates washed ashore on Arundel Island, occupied by Japanese forces. Too injured to flee, Miller urged his comrades to escape without him. Expecting death, he found a dead Japanese soldier and scavenged rice, a bayonet, and grenades. Hiding from enemy patrols, Miller slowly recovered and launched a one-man campaign, using the grenades and bayonet to kill over 20 Japanese soldiers, including machine gun crews. After 43 days on the island, as the enemy hunted him, he signaled a passing U.S. J2F Duck floatplane, which rescued him. For his extraordinary bravery, Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, six Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. Known as the “Wolfman of Arundel,” his legacy of valor endures. Unleash the courage within you.
