Outdated, outgunned, and slower than its contemporaries when the war began, the P-40 Warhawk was transformed into a deadly weapon by the genius of General Claire Chennault and the daring of the Flying Tigers American Volunteer Group (AVG) over China. Through superior tactics, the Warhawk became devastating in aerial combat and ground attacks against the Japanese.
Armed initially with two .50-cal guns in the nose and four .30-cals in the wings, it was upgraded to six .50-cals by war's end. But it's the legendary shark mouth nose art — the most prized paint scheme to emerge from any WWII fighter — that made the P-40 truly immortal.
