The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a fighter jet with a massive cult following and a rock-solid reputation as the US Navy's top interceptor.

Originally built to carry the advanced AIM-54 Phoenix missile and an upgraded radar system, the Tomcat was the only fighter ever purpose-designed for that role.

A supersonic, carrier-borne aircraft, the F-14 saw extensive service from 1970 to 2006 — including the Gulf War, where it delivered both air superiority and ground attack missions. Made famous by the movie Top Gun, it became one of the most iconic of Grumman's legendary "Cat" fighters.

The only other nation to operate the F-14 was Iran, which claimed over 160 Iraqi aircraft downed with the Tomcat. It remains in operation there today.
