Richard Halsey Best: Sunk Two Japanese Aircraft Carriers in One Day

SBD Dauntless Pilot
During the Battle of Midway, Richard Halsey Best launched from the USS Enterprise as the Japanese fleet fell into the American trap. In a single day, he delivered devastating blows that changed the course of the Pacific War.
Best first struck the carrier Akagi, dropping a bomb that exploded deep below decks and sent the flagship to the bottom. After rearming, he launched again and located the carrier Hiryu. His second bomb hit perfectly, sealing its destruction as well.
On his return to the Enterprise, Best began coughing up blood from a malfunctioning oxygen generator. The damage was permanent. He received a 100% disability rating and never flew again, but his extraordinary courage earned him the Navy Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross.
His battle was brief, but legendary.
Valor is in you. Set it free.
