Petty Officer Scott Ruskan

Coastguardsman Hero Saves 165 Lives
On July 4, 2025, catastrophic flooding struck central Texas, trapping over 200 girls from a summer camp in rapidly rising waters.
On his very first rescue mission, former accountant Scott Ruskan was inserted into the chaos. In the darkness and pouring rain, he comforted the terrified children, prioritized the youngest, and personally carried them to safety across hazardous, flooded terrain.
Through unwavering courage, he saved 165 lives that night. Tragically, more than 130 others were lost.
For his extraordinary valor, Ruskan was awarded the Legion of Merit and honored at the State of the Union Address.
His first call to duty could have been his last — but because of his bravery, it was not the final night for hundreds of children. Valor is already within you. Set it free.
