Joe George: Saved 6 men from burning to death

Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Joe George, against orders, threw a rope to save 6 men trapped on a tower on the USS Arizona during the battle at Pearl Harbor. All 6 were rescued but two men (who were on fire at the time of the rescue) died in the hospital later that day. Joe was never given any recognition for his Valor until after his death, when in 2017 he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions that day. His daughter accepted the honor. Those men went on to have families and credit Joe and his defiance as saving their lives.

The way of Valor is not always immediately recognized, but it cannot be hidden. Valor is in you. Set it free.
